As was the custom, land for a cemetery was purchased first. In 1878, our synagogue, Temple Adath Israel was built. There have been services here ever since, although the present congregation is small. Temple Adath Israel is a belief-based synagogue, i.e., we hold the belief that the One extolled in the Sh'ma is as sentient and viable as when the twelve tribes were first given the Top Ten. The emphasis here is on prayer, worship, study. Kinder souls have called us "people of the book." We study Torah, and haf-Torah every Shabbos evening at 6:30 p.m. The First Shabbos of every month there is a traditional service at 6:30 p.m. Tzedakah is a priority also, and is distributed individually or to small groups irrespective of race, ethnicity or religion. The only criteria is need. But, however politically chic social justice has become, we do not participate in organized programs devoted to that purpose exclusively. It is polarizing. Here we share a common religion (welcoming always the input from guests not Jewish) but not necessarily a common political agenda. Our time together is too valuable for argument. To quote Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks speaking about Tzav, "There were Jews who, after the Holocaust, sought to define Jewish identity in terms of suffering, victimhood, survival... Yes, there is Jewish suffering. Yet had this been all, Jews would not have done what in fact most did: hand on their identity to their children as their most precious legacy. To be a Jew is to feel a sense of gratitude; to see life itself as a gift; to be able to live through suffering without being defined by it, to give hope the victory over fear. To be a Jew is to offer thanks."
When you are in our neck of the woods, come give thanks with us.

We hold Shabbat services on the first Friday Night of each Month.
Torah Study every Friday night at 6:30
Please contact the Temple for information on membership and Temple Activities (270) 683-9723
Founded in 1854, our Temple is on the National Historic Register.
